African Community Center Services
The ACC provides our refugee clients with a number of different services.
Case Management
All resettled refugees are assigned a case manager who helps the client with orientation, social and medical service referrals, the attainment of documents, and other necessary items that the client needs in their first few months in the United States. The case worker keeps a record of every case assigned and updates the information for monitoring and auditing purposes.
Employment Services
Clients have access to our Employment Specialist who assists them with resume building, interview techniques, and job placement. The Employment Specialist also finds clients opportunities for training and education which will improve their chances of better wages. The Employment Specialist has a network of contacts in the workforce of Las Vegas and does their best to start our clients on their way towards self sufficiency.
Translation & Interpretation
All of our Case Managers speak and read more than one language, and are able to assist refugees with communication issues. When a case manager is unavailable, ACC is able to pay for interpretation services. Also, ACC refers all clients to ESL (English as a Second Language) school to improve their spoken English.
Rent & Utility Assistance
ACC understands that in the present economy, finding employment is hard for everybody. But it is even harder for newly arrived refugees who may have few applicable job skills and no English. Sometimes emergencies arise and clients are unable to pay their utilities or rent, and so ACC subsidizes these costs on a case by case basis to allow families time to become self sufficient.
Individual Development Accounts (IDA) Program Services
ACC’s IDA program provides grants to match (dollar-for-dollar) participants’ savings for the purpose of buying first time home, paying for college tuition, purchasing vehicle and/ or creating a start up microenterprise. Matching dollars are granted up to $1,000-$4,000 depending on the selected goal and family status. In addition, the IDA program provides training to participants on financial literacy, financial management and asset-specific education.
